How to Do a Saturday Home Reset and Prep Your Home for a Peaceful Week
Create a peaceful home and prepare for Sabbath rest with a simple Saturday reset routine. Catch up on chores, prep for Sunday, and start your week refreshed.
There was a season when my Sundays didn’t feel restful at all. I’d wake up already behind—piles of laundry staring at me from the basket, dishes waiting in the sink, and the never-ending question of, “What are we going to eat after church?”
Instead of spending the day worshiping and enjoying time with my family, I’d spend most of it catching up on what I didn’t finish during the week.
One Saturday afternoon, after another long week of chasing chores, I realized something needed to change. God designed the Sabbath as a gift, not another day to manage chaos. But if I wanted to truly rest on Sunday, I had to prepare for it.
So I started what I now call my Saturday Home Reset—a simple rhythm of catching up, putting away, and preparing. It isn’t about having a Pinterest-perfect house; it’s about creating peace and order so our hearts and homes are ready to rest.
When I finish that last load of laundry, tidy the kitchen, and prep Sunday breakfast, I feel a deep sigh of relief—like my home is saying, “Okay, we’re ready.”
And come Sunday morning? My heart is lighter. My focus is where it should be—on worship, family, and gratitude.

The Purpose Behind the Saturday Reset
I have used a weekly cleaning schedule to manage my home for years. But there are very few weeks that I mark every single thing off.
And that’s okay. My routines are flexible and meant to work for my life, not to add more stress. However, I don’t like the undone chores staring at me on Sunday–and I definitely don’t want them waiting for me on Monday morning!

A Saturday reset helps me prepare my home and heart for Sabbath rest. It’s not just about cleaning, but about making space for peace and worship. I’m not trying to create a perfect home (spoiler alert: I’ll never get there!).
Instead, my goal is to bring order and calm to my space. There are some Saturdays when I do a deep clean of a particular area of my home. Generally, though, my Saturdays are simply a time to reset.
In our hustle and bustle society, taking time to rest feels lazy. But the truth is, our bodies, minds, and spirits were not made to go, go, go, all the time.
We read in Genesis that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. We can follow this pattern and take a day to rest.
If you’re a mom, you know that taking a rest can be just as stressful as not resting if you’re home is not prepared!
Using a combination of a weekly cleaning schedule and a Saturday home reset, we can prepare our hearts and homes for rest. Then, Sunday can be a truly peaceful day.
“When our homes are in order, our hearts find it easier to rest.”
5-Step Saturday Reset
Ready to reset your home on Saturday? It’s a lot easier than you think, and it doesn’t need to take hours.
Let’s break it down and make it an easy, repeatable routine you can do every week.
Step 1: Catch up on missed chores.
Like I mentioned before, I don’t always mark all of my tasks off my to-do list every week. And that’s okay, because the time to catch up is built into my routine.
Don’t get in the weeds with this. Remember, you’ll be doing these chores again next week, os don’t worry about perfection. Just focus on getting it done fast.
30-Minute Power Clean Challenge
Here’s a quick plan you can follow that takes 30 minutes or less–and it’ll be even faster if you get your family involved.
- Focus on quick wins: dishes, wiping counters, sweeping floors.
- Finish mid-week tasks (again, don’t worry about perfection!): vacuuming, putting away clutter, switching loads of laundry.
- Set a 30-minute timer and do this as a family.

Step 2: Fold and put away laundry.
Often, I find that laundry is 75% of the clutter and chaos in my house! Taking the time to put it away not only removes that cluttered feeling, it helps the family start the week fresh. While laundry baskets and hampers are never empty for long, it can give you mental reset to have the laundry “done.”
Laundry is my most hated chore. I try to make it manageable by listening to a podcast or audiobook while I fold.
Doing laundry might be an age-appropriate chore for your kids. If your kids are old enough, have them put away their own laundry. If they’re teens, they can probably fold it themselves, too.

Step 3: Prep Sunday morning.
For some reason, Sunday morning is always rushed at my house. Taking a few minutes to prep on Saturday night can make all the difference in getting out the door on time.
Here are a few ideas:
- Prepare breakfast–think cinnamon rolls (let them rise in the refrigerator overnight), overnight oats, muffins or a casserole.
- Lay out church clothes, and iron if necessary.
- Decide on lunch, and prep if necessary–get the crockpot out, check ingredients, etc.
The goal is to make room for worship and rest on Sunday, and for a great start to a new week on Monday.
Step 4: Reset for the week ahead.
While we do the Saturday reset to prepare for a Sunday rest, it’s also to set up a peaceful start on Monday.
Taking a break on Sunday can set you back on Monday–unless you have a plan. Glance at your calendar on Saturday and see what’s coming up this week. Do you need to prepare for any appointments or events?
Saturday may also be a good day to set your weekly family meal plan. Check your pantry and refrigerator to see what needs to be restocked before the week begins.
Think of this Saturday reset as pressing the “refresh” button before the week begins.

Step 5: Create a peaceful evening routine.
We want a peaceful evening routine every night, but we should especially try to have one on Saturday.
Help yourself relax by lighting a candle, playing some soft worship music, or spending some time in prayer or gratitude journaling. It’s also a great time to have a devotion with your family and turn your hearts toward God.
As the week ends, reflect on God’s blessings and thank Him for His provision.
This reset isn’t about striving–it’s about surrendering your home and heart to the Lord.
