One of my favorite parts of the Christmas season is those few minutes right before we open presents. The family is gathered around the tree.
The kids can barely sit still from excitement. Those gifts they’ve been staring at all month are only moments from being revealed.
For a little while, all the stress you’ve carried over the weeks melt away. You can’t wait to see the joy on their faces as they experience the magic of Christmas as only a child can.
That moment, filled with peace and cheer, is the perfect opportunity to offer a heartfelt Christmas prayer for your family.
The Christmas season is one of the most beautiful times of the year. It’s a time to gather with family members, reflect on the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
We do our best to celebrate His birth with joy and gratitude. Amid the busy schedules and festive traditions, a heartfelt Christmas prayer can help center your family on the true meaning of Christmas.
Whether you’re sitting around the tree on Christmas morning or gathered at the dinner table on Christmas Day, taking a moment to share a simple prayer can bring your family closer together in faith and love.
Below, we’ve created a Christmas prayer guide and a free printable template to make it easy to include this meaningful tradition in your celebrations.
What to Include in Your Christmas Prayer
A Christmas prayer doesn’t have to be lengthy or elaborate. A humble prayer from the heart can be just as powerful. Here are seven ideas to include when crafting your family’s Christmas prayer.
1. Gratitude for the Birth of Jesus
It’s easy to get caught up in all the Christmas things. So, it’s important to help our kids (and ourselves) bring our focus to Jesus on His birthday.
Begin your prayer by thanking God for the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. We can experience eternal life in Heaven because He chose to come to earth to save us.
Reflect on the incredible gift of salvation and the great mercy shown to us through His coming.
2. Thankfulness for Family Members and Blessings
The Bible tells us in James 1:17 that every good and perfect gift comes from God. Sometimes life gets us down, and we struggle to see the good things.
Christmas is a wonderful time to count our blessings. We can count tangible things, like a family, home, and friends.
But God has also given us many blessings that we cannot hold in our hands–health, peace, salvation, grace, and mercy.
Take a moment to express gratitude for the blessings in your life—your family members, your home, and the memories you’re creating this Christmas season.
3. Comfort for Those Experiencing Loss
Not every family will celebrate with joy this year. Many people face hardships and heartache during the Christmas season.
Some families will gather around the tree with fewer members than last year. Others may have lost jobs or had financial losses and their Christmas doesn’t look the same.
As you gather to celebrate, take time to remember those grieving or struggling and pray for God’s peace to surround them.
4. Peace in the New Year
People disagree about many things in our modern society. But one thing most of us do agree on is that we want peace.
We want a world where our children aren’t in danger, our military personnel aren’t involved in conflicts, and people get along. While we know that our world will never experience true peace until Jesus returns, our hearts long for it.
The Christmas season is often a peaceful time as people ponder the birth of Christ and reach out in love to those around them. Let’s pray that God will help us to carry this peaceful attitude into the new year.
Ask God for peace and unity in the year ahead. Pray for healing in your family, community, and the world.
5. A Spirit of Generosity
What is it about Christmas that makes us want to give and give and give? Whatever it is, that spirit of generosity fades when the new year rolls in.
But generosity and a spirit of giving should be evident in our lives all year. We should always be willing to give as God leads us.
Pray for a heart that reflects Christ’s generosity. Ask for opportunities to share His love and kindness with those in need. Pray that God will open your eyes to needs you can meet.
