Getting Cozy with Your Bible

If you’ve ever longed for a closer relationship with God but weren’t quite sure how to get there, oh friend…you are in good company.

For years, my Bible felt more like something I should read than something I wanted to pick up. I loved the Lord, but opening His Word felt overwhelming, intimidating, or—if we’re being honest—like one more thing on a very long list.

But something changed when I finally understood this: God actually invites us into a relationship with Him through His Word.

Not out of guilt or pressure–but because He has something to say to you, today.

The Bible isn’t a dry book sitting on a shelf. It’s the living, breathing Word of God—His notes, His comfort, His wisdom, His correction, His love letter to His children.

And when you start seeing it that way? Everything shifts.

Reading Your Bible Doesn’t Have to Feel Like a Chore

If you cringe a little thinking about Bible time—or avoid it for weeks at a time—you are NOT broken or unspiritual.

You’re human. Life is full. Kids need you. The laundry never ends. Dinner sneaks up on you every night like it’s a surprise party.

And when you’re stretched thin, even something good can feel like a task.

But what if Bible reading became something you looked forward to? What if it wasn’t pressure…but peace? Not duty…but delight?

What if opening your Bible felt like meeting with Someone who already knows you, already loves you, and already has exactly what your heart needs?

You don’t have to force a connection with God. If you simply show up, He will meet you there.

Make Bible Reading an Enjoyable Habit

One of the easiest ways to build a new habit is to pair it with something you already enjoy.

Maybe it’s your favorite mug filled with strong, hot coffee (my personal favorite… preferably before the kids wake up). Maybe it’s the corner of the couch that always gets the good sunlight. For you, it might be a cozy blanket, a candle, or soft worship music playing in the background.

There’s something special about creating a rhythm your heart begins to anticipate—“This is my time with the Lord.”

Over time, those little comforts become part of the experience…not the point, but a gentle way to ease your heart into connection.

Find a Bible Reading Plan You’ll Actually Stick With

Once you’ve created a welcoming routine, choosing a reading plan helps you stay consistent. There’s no one “right” way to study the Bible, and honestly, different seasons call for different rhythms.

Here are some simple options:

1. Read by book

Pick a book—John, Proverbs, James, Ruth—and walk through it a little at a time. This gives you a clear flow and helps you understand the big picture.

2. Read by character

If someone’s story resonates with you—Esther’s courage, Hannah’s prayers, David’s worship—you can follow their journey through Scripture.

3. Read by topic

When your heart is wrestling with something specific—fear, joy, forgiveness, purpose—Scripture comes alive in such personal ways.

4. Read through the Bible in a year

This is a beautiful way to take in the full story of Scripture. And yes…15 minutes a day really does add up.

No matter which plan you choose, the goal is simple. Spend consistent, meaningful time with God.

3 Ways to Hide God’s Word in Your Heart

The more time you spend in Scripture, the more you’ll crave it. As Psalm 42:1 says, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”

Memorizing Scripture anchors truth deep in your heart—truth you can carry into stress, fear, joy, and ordinary moments.

Here are a few simple ways to do it:

1. Choose verses that speak to your season

Are you overwhelmed? Fearful? Needing direction? Carry a verse that speaks to that.

2. Put it everywhere

  • Your mirror.
  • Your car.
  • Your kitchen window.
  • Your phone wallpaper.

Let it meet you in the middle of your real, everyday life.

3. Say it out loud

Meditate on it. Let it sink in. Ask God to help you understand it and apply it.

This is how His Word becomes part of who you are.

Tools That Help You Go Deeper in Bible Study

You don’t need a huge stack of resources to study your Bible well—but a few simple tools can really help:

  • A Bible dictionary (definitions & context)
  • A concordance (all the verses on any topic)
  • A commentary (helpful explanations)
  • A notebook or journal (capture what God is showing you)

Pick what serves you—nothing fancy required.

Step Into a New Bible Reading Habit

Making Bible time a daily rhythm takes practice, grace, and a whole lot of do-overs. That’s okay.

God isn’t disappointed by your learning curve. He’s not keeping score. He’s simply delighted every time you draw near—even if it’s five quiet minutes squeezed in between loads of laundry and reheating your coffee…again.

Friend, He loves you. He invites you. And His Word is waiting—full of peace, truth, comfort, and hope.

Take a deep breath. Open your Bible. And get cozy with the One who loves you more than you can imagine.
