When You Feel Weak: How to Lean on God’s Strength

In this post: The Bible tells us that when we are weak, we are strong in Him. Learn how to lean on God’s strength when yours is gone.

We don’t like to admit that we’re weak. Most women I know want to be amazing wives and moms–the kind who have it all together. Like the Proverbs 31 woman. But no matter how hard we try, we can’t do all the things, all the time.

I know many women who face real struggles every day. Some suffer from debilitating migraines that send them to their beds for days at a time.

Others battle anxiety and depression, but still get up each morning and care for their families. Some women walk the painful road of infertility, while others deal with chronic health conditions that doctors can’t seem to fix.

Millions of mothers are raising children with special needs. They pour themselves out every single day in ways most people will never understand. Many others are single moms, carrying the weight of their families on their shoulders.

When You Feel Like You’re Not Enough

Whether it’s exhaustion, illness, or overwhelming responsibility, we all come face to face with our weaknesses at some point.

And when we do, the world tells us to push harder, to dig deeper, to fix ourselves. The self-help section at the bookstore is full of books promising to give us the strength we need.

But no amount of effort or motivation can change the fact that we were never meant to do it all alone.

Paul gives us a different perspective on weakness.

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
2 Corinthians 12:10

Instead of being discouraged by all the things we aren’t he says we should rejoice.

Why?

Because when we are weak, God is strong.

Paul understood that his own strength was never enough, but that didn’t discourage him. It gave him hope.

Paul knew that God’s power fills in the gaps when he fell short. And He does the same for us.

God is Enough

You don’t have to carry every burden on your own. You don’t have to be enough in your own strength. He is enough for you.

His grace will sustain you. His strength will carry you.

When you feel like you can’t take another step, you can lean fully on God.

Live It Out

Here’s how to apply these truths in your daily life.

  • Admit where you are weak. Acknowledging your need for God isn’t a failure- it’s faith.
  • Invite God into your struggles. Ask Him to step into the areas where you feel overwhelmed and to replace your weakness with His strength.
  • Rest in His sufficiency. You don’t have to be everything for everyone. Let God fill in the gaps where you can’t.

Pray It Over

Lord, You see my heart, and You know how much I long to care for my family. But I am weak, and I cannot do it all on my own.

Please, take my weaknesses and replace them with Your strength. Let my life be filled with Your love and peace, and help me pass them on to my family.
