A couple of weeks ago my kids stumbled out of bed a bit early and found me doing my daily Bible reading in our kitchen.
This year I have been listening to the Bible as I read, and it’s been a wonderful experience so far.
That morning I was listening to the story of Abraham. My boys sat with wide eyes as if hearing the story for the first time.
Suddenly, I realized it may be the first time they had actually heard the story being read directly from the Bible.
As adults who are well-versed in the Bible, sometimes we forget that our kids don’t know it all yet. And it’s our job to direct them to a kid friendly Bible reading plan that will engage, encourage and teach them the truth of God’s love.

At its core, a kids’ Bible reading plan is a guide that helps kids stay on track and read scripture consistently. Use it as a way to introduce kids to the Bible. Or for more experienced readers of God’s Word, it can serve as an ongoing reminder to have a daily Bible reading habit.

How Do I Start Reading the Bible to My Child?
If you’re just getting started with Bible reading for kids, here are a few tips to help your child get the most out of their kids’ Bible reading plan:
1. Choose age-appropriate material.
It’s true that the Bible is a perfect book that God gave us for “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (2 Timothy 3:16)
However, there are parts of the Bible that are difficult to understand, even as an adult. And some things you don’t want to explain to your kids.
Avoid those more difficult passages when you start reading the with your kids. Start with simple, age-appropriate verses that kids can understand. Then, make sure you also teach them how to live the verses they’re reading.
2. Start small and read a few verses each day.
At first, kids may not have the attention span to read long passages. Start with short readings that kids can understand and give them time to reflect on what they’ve read.
If your kids are a little bit older, they can also write down their observations. They can also draw pictures to help them remember what they read.
3. Involve kids in the Bible reading process.
Never let your kids feel like you’re just reading to them. Encourage them to read short verses, or even help them memorize portions of Scripture.
Responsive reading is a great way to get the whole family involved in the Bible-reading process. Mom or Dad reads a verse, kids the next, and so forth. In addition to growing their Bible knowledge, they’ll improve their reading skills, too!
4. Talk about the stories from the Bible and encourage questions.
Once kids start reading the Bible, make sure to talk with them about what they’re learning. Ask questions that will help kids think deeper about the scripture, and more importantly, how it applies to their lives.
5. Create an atmosphere of fun and exploration.
Bible reading for kids should be fun, not a burden. Create an atmosphere of exploration and discovery. Make it less about memorizing facts and more about cultivating a deep understanding of God’s love for us.
