4 Ways to Prepare to Welcome Guests into Your Home

I gave up striving for a Pinterest-perfect home a while ago. And my family is happy here in our not-perfect house.

Our home is cozy, and joy-filled–but it definitely looks like people live here. Because we do. There are books on the coffee table, Lego on the floor, and sometimes dishes on the island.

When I find out someone wants to make a surprise visit, I feel the need to whip it into shape quickly.

There’s not enough time to do a top-to-bottom deep clean, so I have to settle for tidying my home in a hurry.

Here are 4 simple tips to follow to help you get your house whipped into shape in thirty minutes or less–even if your kids are home!

Company coming? Don’t freak out! Follow this simple plan.

1. Start with the Spaces They’ll Actually See

You don’t have to deep clean your whole house. Focus on the areas your guests are most likely to walk through:

  • Entryway
  • Living room
  • Guest bathroom
  • Kitchen/dining area

Grab a laundry basket and quickly gather up any clutter—papers, toys, books—and stash it out of sight for now (we’ll worry about it later!). Fluff the couch pillows, straighten up throw blankets, and light a candle or turn on a diffuser with your favorite calming scent.

💡 Bonus tip: Play worship music or your favorite playlist to help you feel calm and focused while you tidy.

2. Fast Kitchen Fixes (No Deep Cleaning Required!)

If your guests will be near the kitchen, a few quick touches go a long way:

  • Clear countertops
  • Wipe down visible surfaces with a favorite all-purpose spray
  • Load any dirty dishes into the dishwasher (or neatly stack them out of sight)
  • Sweep up crumbs or spot-mop any sticky spills
  • Switch out your hand towel for a clean one

If you have time, set out a small treat like cookies, lemonade, or even a bowl of mints. It doesn’t have to be fancy to feel special!

3. Bathroom Blitz

You can make your bathroom look fresh in under 10 minutes:

  • Wipe the sink, counter, and toilet quickly
  • Switch out the hand towel
  • Empty the trash
  • Check the toilet paper supply
  • Add a cotton ball with essential oils behind the toilet for a fresh scent

If you’re feeling extra, light a candle in the bathroom or turn on a small nightlight for soft lighting.

4. Simple Final Touches That Feel Like Love

Little things can make a big difference in how welcoming your home feels. Try one or two of these:

  • Light a candle or diffuser with a peaceful scent
  • Turn on lamps instead of overhead lights for a cozy glow
  • Tidy your entryway or offer a place for coats and bags
  • Play soft instrumental music in the background

Hospitality is all about making others feel noticed and cared for—and these small touches speak volumes.

When You Didn’t Get It All Done—Love Still Lives Here

Sometimes, even with the best intentions, you just don’t have time to clean. And you know what? That’s okay.

If someone is coming into your home, they’re coming to see you. They’re not there to judge your dust bunnies or your laundry pile.

Remember the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10? While Martha busied herself with preparations, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. And Jesus gently reminded Martha that Mary had chosen the better part.

Friend, there’s a time for cleaning—but there’s also a time for connection. If the dishes are undone or the toys are out, but your heart is welcoming and at peace, you’ve already made your guests feel at home.

Hospitality is a Heart Posture

A perfectly clean home is nice… but a heart that says “You are welcome here” is even better.

Whether you have time to clean or not, your willingness to open the door and share your space is a beautiful gift. Your home, your smile, your presence—they matter more than any spotless floor ever could.

You’re doing a wonderful job, Mama.

Now go fluff that pillow, light that candle, and welcome your people in—Legos and all.
