But we all need that day to say goodbye to warm days and hello to crisp, cool weather.

Using a printable word puzzle and other printable games as part of your weekly lesson plans is a great way to make the most of this holiday.

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, so we often celebrate it with cookouts.

When I was growing up, our town had an awesome Labor Day celebration with a carnival, parade, and fireworks. Our whole family, plus my aunt, uncle, and cousins spent the whole day at my granny’s house.

It was one last hurrah before the start of school.

Looking back, those are some of my favorite memories.

But if you asked me what the holiday was about, or why we were stuffing our faces with cheap parade candy, I couldn’t have told you.

Since Labor Day is an important part of our nation’s history, I decided to learn a little bit about it and help my kids understand it too.

A Short History of Labor Day

Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, and was planned by the Central Labor Union.

Over the next several years, 23 more states adopted the holiday. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland declared that the first Monday of September would be a Federal holiday in the United States.

The holiday was set aside as a day to honor the achievements of American workers. It’s one of our minor national holidays, but it serves an important role in our society.

The first proposal for Labor Day stated it should be a day showing “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations.”

Many towns still celebrate with parades, festivals, and other amusements.

Most (although not all) businesses close for the day, and families get to spend the day together celebrating hard work!
