One of my greatest blessings in life is being a mom. I was raised mostly by a single dad. Even though he’s awesome, I wasn’t sure if I knew how to be a good mom. (Not going to lie, sometimes I still wonder!)

But one thing I’ve found out since becoming a mom is that God gives mothers an amazing capacity to love their children. He gives us the strength we need to face the struggles of motherhood with grace and wisdom. (Let’s face it, motherhood is a struggle!)

God’s Word has so much to say about the importance of mothers. We see examples of good mothers, bad mothers, and even the mother of all living!

Raising little humans to know all the things they need to know to be successful adults who love God with sincere faith is a daunting task! The good news is that we don’t have to do it alone. The Word of God is there to give us the strength and wisdom we need.

What Does the Bible Say About Mothers?

God cares about mothers. He had a special plan for us from the beginning of time. Genesis 3:20 says, “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.”

When the serpent deceived Eve, God said, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

His plan for redemption would come through a woman.

Four thousand years later, God sent His Son, Jesus, to be born of a woman. Of all the ways He could’ve sent His Son, God chose to use a mother.

Over and over again He used the relationship between a mother and her children to represent the love He has for His children.

In Luke 7, we read the story of a widow whose son had died. He was the only person she had to take care of her.

Jesus passed by the funeral as they prepared to bury the man. He had compassion on this mother and raised her son from the dead.

When Jesus died on the cross, He looked down and saw His mother standing there. He told His disciple, John to take care of her. That alone shows us how much He loved her.

The Bible shows us over and over again how much God loves mothers!

    Proverbs 31:25-28–Honors a Mother’s Wisdom

Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

This passage from Proverbs speaks to a mother’s inner strength, her foresight, and the wisdom she shares. Mothers are often the bedrock of families, teaching kindness by example and ensuring the well-being of their children. It’s fitting to recognize just how much her children and spouse value and appreciate her.

    Isaiah 66:13–A Mother Comforts

As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

Have you ever held a baby that’s crying, crying and crying? Then, as soon as you pass it back to its mother, the crying stops.

Because there is something comforting about being in held by your mama.

In Isaiah 66 we are reminded of the comforting spirit that mothers possess. It’s a trait so distinct that God likens His own comfort to that of a mother’s. And that’s special.

    Ephesians 6:2-3–Obeying Your Mother

Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

How important is it to honor and obey your mother? According to this verse, it’s important to live a long and full life!

A timeless commandment, this excerpt calls for us to show honor to our parents. On Mother’s Day, it’s a wonderful opportunity to show our mothers just how much we value them.

    Psalm 139:13–Celebrates a Mother’s Love

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.

This verse celebrates the intimate bond between a mother and her child, even from the earliest stages of life. It also reminds us that God created each of us to be unique.

For nine months a baby grows in its mother’s belly, forming a special bond that lasts forever. A mama loves that baby while its still inside her. Her love only grows stronger throughout her child’s life.

    Proverbs 31:31–Praises a Mother’s Hard Work

Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Sometimes we feel like no one notices all the hard work we do as moms. But God sees!

Proverbs 31:31 recognizes a mother’s hard work, and highlights the importance of celebrating her achievements and contributions.

Proverbs 23:25–Mother’s Pride of Their Children

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

Nothing makes a mom more happy than seeing her children obey! (Especially since we’ve already seen that obeying leads to long life and peace!)

When I succeed at something, my heart is filled with great joy. But seeing my kids succeed makes me even happier.

      2 Timothy 1:5–A Mother’s Teaching Matters

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Eunice and Lois are two of my favorite women in the Bible. Their story reminds us that faith and love are often passed down from generation to generation. It’s a gift from mothers that keeps on giving.

      Luke 1:46-48–God Cares About Mothers

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

In this passage, Mary, the mother of Jesus, exemplifies humility and gratitude, a model for mothers everywhere. These are some of my favorite verses as we read what Mary was thinking as she was pregnant with our Lord Jesus Christ.

      Psalm 127:3–Children Are a Blessing

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

Motherhood is depicted here as both a blessing and a divine gift, a reminder of the special role mothers play. Our modern society often sees children as a burden.

They hold mothers back or keep them from pursuing their dreams. But God says they are the best blessing we can have.

Proverbs 1:8-9–A Mother Shapes Her Children

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

A father’s instruction and a mother’s life-giving teaching are invaluable. They shape the character and spirit of their children.

The things we say to our kids really matter. We want to teach them to go the right way and follow the Lord rather than going their own way. It’s up to us to give them faithful instruction in the ways of the Lord.

Isaiah 49:15–A Mother’s Love Never Ends

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

A mother never forgets her child. It’s such a special relationship that God uses it to refer to the love He has for His children.

A mother doesn’t forget her children. But even if she could, God will never forget us.

Proverbs 31:29–A Good Mother is Virtuous

Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

In Proverbs 31 we read all about the virtuous woman. She is who we all aspire to be. This verse elevates and celebrates the virtuous woman, setting her above all others in her deeds and character.

She embodies strength, wisdom, and love in her actions. She has a profound influence on her family and her community.

Luke 2:51–A Mother Ponders in Her Heart

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

As the mother of Christ Jesus, Mary probably experienced a lot of stuff while He was growing up! In Luke 2 we read the story of how Jesus was teaching the elders in the temple.

When Joseph and Mary found Him, He obediently followed them back home. But Mary didn’t forget what she had seen. Isn’t that how we all are as moms?

Watching our kids, praying for them and waiting to see how God will use them in their lives.

      Proverbs 14:1–Mothers Build Their Homes

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

I love this mental picture of a mother who builds her home. A mother’s strength can be see in the way she nurtures her beloved children.

She uses her words and actions to build them up, to guide them, and to lead them in the right way. Don’t underestimate the power of your words as you share God’s love with your kids.

Galatians 6:9–A Godly Mother Has Rewards

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

The task of raising children seems like it will never end. (And some would argue that it doesn’t.) But we can’t give up!

A mother who continues to pour good things into her children day after day and year after year will reap the benefits in the long term.

1 Peter 3:3-4–A Christian Mother Has an Unfading Beauty

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

The world has a lot of standards for what beauty is. But God says true beauty comes from the inside. We’ve all known a woman who looks beautiful on the outside, but her nasty attitude makes her truly ugly.

Shining the love of God through a gentle spirit is a beautiful way to pass on grace-filled thoughts and actions to our kids. Looks fade as we get older, but a kind and gentle attitude lasts forever.

      Titus 2:4–Mothers Are Teachers

That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

One of the greatest responsibilities of motherhood is teaching the next generation. Sometimes older women think their work is done. But their role is still important!

God wants these older mothers to teach younger women how to love their own husbands, raise their children, and take care of their homes.

      1 Timothy 5:14–Mothers Are Homemakers

I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

As mothers, we set the tone in our homes. God’s will for women is to have children and take care of their homes.

That’s not to say that a woman can’t have a job. But at the end of the day, she sets the mood and atmosphere in her home.

      3 John 1:4–Children Are a Joy

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

On Mother’s Day, we celebrate moms. But a mom is only made when a child is born!

A child brings joy to a mama’s heart. When we see them following the Lord it brings even more joy to our hearts.

We love to see them make wise choices that honor God. In fact, there is no greater joy for a mother than to see her children walk in God’s truth.

      1 Corinthians 13:4-7–A Mother’s Love is Unselfish

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

In 1 Corinthians 13, the Apostle Paul gives us a list of Bible verses about true love. It serves others, doesn’t get angry easily, sees the good in others, and rejoices in the truth.

I especially love the part about enduring all things. Can anything describe motherhood better than that?

      1 Samuel 1:27–The Lord Hears a Mother’s Prayers

For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

The story of Hannah and her prayer for Samuel is one of the most beautiful stories of motherhood in the Bible. It’s proof to us that God sees the desire of a woman’s heart.

He has the power to take a barren woman and make her a joyous mother of children.
