As someone who loves to read, I always dreamed that my kids would love reading, too. However, that hasn’t turned out to be the case.

One of my boys likes to read books about a very particular topic–World War 2. The other doesn’t care much for reading at all.

Fortunately, they love to listen to books. We have read countless books aloud since we started homeschooling. But mama can’t read aloud all day!

After they begged, “Just one more chapter!” about a hundred times, I realized we might need a new listening device.

A quick search on Audible showed me that I’m not the only mom who uses audiobooks to get her kids to read. (Yes, audiobooks count at books!)

There are tons of great options for kids’ audiobooks out there, and we’ve listened to dozens of them. We borrow them from the library, use our library apps, and our Audible credits to build up our collection.

My boys give mixed reviews to some of the books. But these 9 books and series are their favorites.

By “favorites” I mean they’ve listened to them so many times they can quote sections of them. Plus, these books are mom-approved when it comes to attitudes and appropriate language!

Choosing Wholesome Audiobooks for Kids

I chose these books as our favorite repeats for a reason. Yes, they all have great stories, but they also are wholesome and fun.

I don’t mind my boys listening to these over and over again. They don’t have any crude language, back-talking kids, or hidden agendas.

My family has listened to these books over and over again, so I can promise you they aren’t boring!

10 Best Audiobooks for Boys

The books on this list will entertain your kids for hours. They are family-friendly, and written for middle-grade readers and listeners.

mosses with bazookas

Mooses with Bazookas: And Other Books Children Should Never Read

If the title doesn’t give it away, I should tell you that Mooses with Bazookas is downright silly. It’s not only one story, but a lot of mini-stories in one book.

It has multiple narrators, including one of our favorites, Joel Clarkson. The stories are zany, and funny and have lots of action and adventure that boys love.

Barry the Moose is their favorite character, but Wally Wormbottom is pretty great, too.

The Henry Huggins Audio collection

The Henry Huggins Audio Collection

I can’t say enough good things about The Henry Huggins Audio Collection. We love Henry, Ribsy, Beezus, Scooter, and all the kids on Klickitat Street. These books were written in the 1950s, so they are wholesome and clean.

The stories have no kids with bad attitudes, questionable language, or even fighting and arguing. The Henry Huggins series encourages kids to have good, old-fashioned fun doing things like building treehouses, riding bikes, and teaching dogs to fetch the newspaper.

The version narrated by Neil Patrick Harris is our favorite. He does a great job with all the character voices!

The Flying Flamingo Sisters

While The Flying Flamingo Sisters is a story about three girls, it includes a lot of fun things like airplanes, codes, and mysterious adventures that boys love. The sisters, Flo, Fay, and Frannie, are trying to find their family’s hidden treasure before their evil uncle steals it.

It has multiple narrators to make it interesting to listen to. The Flying Flamingo Sisters is an Audible original, so you can only get it on that platform. But it’s free for members!

The Mouse and the Motorcycle

The Mouse and the Motorcycle

This book takes place in a hotel where Keith and his family have been stranded for the weekend. Keith meets Ralph, a mouse who lives in the walls of the hotel.

Ralph is surprised to learn that Keith can talk to him. He’s even more surprised to learn that he can make Keith’s toy motorcycle actually run! Ralph and Keith form an unlikely friendship. In the end, Ralph learns a lesson about friendship, sacrifice, and putting others first.

The first book in the series is my favorite, and it’s narrated by B.D. Wong. You can also get the three-book series, The Ralph S. Mouse Audio Collection.

the ramona quimby audio collection

The Ramona Quimby Series

When you finish Henry Huggins, the next step is obviously to read Ramona Quimby! Ramona is a bit of a pest to Henry, but now she’s growing up–slowly but surely.

Ramona gets herself into scrape after scrape, including dying her feet blue, going to school in her pajamas, dropping out of kindergarten, falling through a ceiling, and more. Her adventures never get old, and we laugh no matter how many times we listen.

Little House on the Prairie

The Little House on the Prairie Series

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie books have been fan favorites for years and with good reason. Her stories are classic and remind us of the struggles our ancestors faced so that we could have the country we have today.

I thought my boys wouldn’t like these books because the main characters are girls. (If you have boys, you know.) But they actually loved them. We learned about bravery, faith and the true meaning of family.

Our favorites were Little House on the Prairie, Little Town on the Prairie, and The Long Winter. The edition we love is narrated by Cherry Jones. She does a great job with the voices as well as singing all of Pa’s songs with violin accompaniment.

the green ember

The Green Ember Series

The Green Ember is one of my favorites, and listening to it is far better than reading it. The series takes place in an animal world with two rabbits as unlikely heroes.

When their parents are killed by wolves, Heather and Picket are rescued by a mysterious hero and taken to a country they never knew to fight an unseen enemy. These wholesome books don’t lack adventure, excitement, or character lessons. They are narrated by Joel Clarkson who does an amazing job with all the voices.

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls Series

My boys love The Magic Treehouse, and The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series is like the Christian version of those. Mary and Peter are stuck at their grandfather’s house while their parents are gone on an archeological mission.

When they find a hidden scroll, they are transported back to Bible times. They get to experience the Bible in real life while solving a mystery along the way.

The Tower Treasure

The Hardy Boys

You can never go wrong with a classic! Frank and Joe have been solving mysteries for over 80 years, but they’re still teenagers. You can start with The Tower Treasure or any of the over 56 books in the series.

I love these books because they are wholesome, teach teamwork, and give boys a glimpse of life as it used to be. (And some girls I know love them, too!)

the Magic treehouse world at war

The Magic Treehouse: World at War

My boys love The Magic Treehouse, but this one is their favorite. It’s geared towards kids who are a little bit older, as it focuses on some darker topics.

Jack and Annie travel back to Europe in June 1944, where they have to work to save their friends before D-Day.

Where to Listen to the Best Audiobooks for Boys

Audiobooks can be expensive if you try to buy them individually. Thankfully, there are some ways you can get them for discounted prices or even free!

The Library

We live in a small town, but our library is very well-stocked with good audiobooks. We’ve borrowed some really good ones there over the last few years. We bought a small CD player so we can listen to them at home.

Hoopla and Libby Apps

If you aren’t using your library apps, drop everything and do it now! We have borrowed so many books and audiobooks from Hoopla and Libby. These apps are free to use with your library card, and they have thousands (maybe millions) of books, audiobooks, movies, comics, music albums, TV shows, and more. All free!

Audible

We have an Audible membership, and our whole family loves and uses it. My boys each have a Kindle, and I can add their books to their Kindle library. They can listen to them whenever they have their Kindles.

As a note, I only add approved audiobooks to their devices, and rarely let them listen when I can’t hear, too.

headphones on top of a pile of colorful books

Listen to Audiobooks and Watch Your Kids Grow!

If your kids are like mine, they don’t sit still often enough to read physical books. But we use audiobooks as background noise while we do other activities like building with Lego, art projects, cleaning or just relaxing together.

I have seen my boys’ vocabulary improve, as well as their listening, memory, and comprehension skills. Plus, it’s a great way to spend time together doing something we all love!
