“I’m scared, Mommy.”His baby voice came from the backseat of our car. We were driving up a long, winding road to a friend’s house. The road was narrow, and tall trees hid the light of the moon. 

Even as an adult, I found myself feeling a little creepy. 

“It’s okay, buddy,” I told him. “Jesus is always with us. Let’s learn a Bible verse to help us remember not to be afraid, okay?”

Right there in the dark car, I taught my toddler Psalm 56:3

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. 

My mama heart soared with pride as he repeated the words. We practiced a few times a day for the next few days, but I wasn’t sure he understood. 

Until I caught him on the porch a few days later. There was a big, ugly bug on the railing where he needed to pass by. He stared at it for a second, and said, “What time I am afraid, I will put my trust in thee.”

And he walked right by.

Yes, this was just one of the small Bible verses, but it impacted my little boy in a powerful way.

How do I help a child memorize Bible Verses?

Kids’ brains are like sponges. They can easily learn just about anything, and that’s why it’s vital that we fill their minds with God’s Word while they’re young. Here are a few tips to help kids learn Bible memory verses.

1. Make Scripture a part of your kids’ lives while they are young.

Just like my three-year-old, toddlers are capable of learning simple Bible verses. Young children have so much capacity for learning. By teaching Bible verses to them, you are planting a seed that will last forever. 

2. Use real-life applications. 

God’s Word is meant to offer us help in every life situation. Teach your kids to turn to the Bible for everyday life help. 

Teach them verses about kindness, love, sharing, and obeying–common issues kids face. Encourage them always to search for answers to their problems in the Bible.

3. Teach Bible verses through music and motion. 

When I was little, my dad taught our family to quote Psalm 150. It’s a short passage about praising God with a list of musical instruments. 

As we said the verses, we pretended to play each instrument. We played our air guitar, piano, and cymbals as we said the words.  Those verses stay with me even to this day. 

Make up fun hand motions that illustrate passages, and they’ll become easy Bible verses to remember.

4. Start teaching with simple Bible verses for kids. 

The Bible has a lot of really long verses. Don’t start there! Start teaching kids with short, simple Bible verses.

One of my favorite things to do is shorten long verses for little ones. Help them understand the main point of a verse for now. As they get older they can build on the knowledge. 

5. Use the alphabet to teach easy memory verses. 

Most kids learn the alphabet even before they go to school. Make good use of their new knowledge, and use the basic letters to teach Bible verses, too!

When my son did homeschool preschool, we learned one new letter, and one new Bible verse each week. We used printable Bible verse cards to see the letter and say the verse.

What Are Some Good Short Bible Verses?

Bible verses don’t have to be long to be powerful or meaningful. In fact, the shortest verse in the Bible has only nine letters.

To think that Jesus was so heartbroken over the death of His dear friend that He wept…I can’t think of anything more powerful than the Son of God weeping, can you?

Easy Bible verses to Memorize

The Bible is full of short verses that are easy to memorize. In fact, some are so short and straightforward, that even small children can learn them by heart.

My personal favorite short verse is 1 Thessalonians 5:17. It’s short, to the point, and a powerful reminder of what God wants me to do at all times. (Pray–without ceasing.)

1. Proverbs 3:5–Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

As moms, we want to plant seeds in the hearts of our children so that the Holy Spirit can use them to help our children grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. We want them to understand God’s love for them, and come to know the Lord Jesus as their Savior. 

Bible lessons, easy Bible memory verses, and Sunday School lessons are all small things God can use to lead our children to Him. Use these easy verses to memorize to encourage your own heart, and your kids, too!
