6 Powerful Prayers a Mama Can Pray for Her Son
As a mom, there are powerful prayers for my son I pray for guidance, protection, and blessings. Find six encouraging prayers to help your son grow in faith here.
There’s nothing like the feeling that comes from holding your brand-new baby boy in your arms. You’d do anything to protect him from harm and make him happy. A mother’s love is truly something that can never be described until you’ve felt it.
The bond between a mother and son is so special. Sweet boys hold their mama’s hand, bring her little flowers from the front yard and give the best goodnight kisses.
But as our sons grow older, we realize they aren’t ours to keep. Every mother knows she’s ultimately raising her little man to one day give him to someone else.
We want to raise our sons to be hard-working men who love and honor God. But we also want them to be kind, strong husbands and fathers who take care of their wives and families.
Masculinity is under attack in our modern society. Strong men who stand up for the truth are often called “toxic.” It’s difficult for men to stand their ground.
But we know that prayer is powerful! Praying for your children really can make a difference in the situations in their lives.
How to Pray for Your Son
Our sons need us to pray for them whether they are toddlers or grown men. When you have younger children at home, praying over your child has a lot to do with attitudes and actions.
As a homeschooling mom, I often see the issues my sons are facing, and I know where they need help. I can take these issues to my Heavenly Father every day in prayer.
Prayers for toddlers and small children also include praying for their salvation and spiritual growth. Prayers for my sons are centered around the hope that they will come to Christ while they are young.
However, prayers for my grown son would be different. It might seem like our adult children might not need our prayers as much–but that just isn’t true! We need to pray for our children all throughout their lives!
Praying over your children isn’t a burden, but a privilege. A mother’s prayers are powerful. God sees and understands a mother’s heart as she prays for a son’s salvation, protection, strength, and health, and even prays when he’s in trouble.
Sometimes we pray for our sons for years, and it seems that God doesn’t hear. But He is always listening. Don’t give up saying prayers for your sons!
The Power of a Mother’s Prayers for Her Children
One of the most beautiful stories we read in the Bible is the one about Hannah. Her husband had two wives, Hannah and Peninah. Peninah had several children, while Hannah had none. When her heart was broken, Hannan prayed a prayer for children.
God heard her prayer and gave her the desire of her heart–a son named Samuel who became a great man in Isreal.
Mothers hold a special place in God’s heart. In fact, we see that when Jesus died on the cross, one of the last things He did was to tell John to care for His mother.
God hears my prayers for my child, just the way He heard Hannah’s. And he hears your prayers for yours, too.
6 Powerful Prayers to Pray for Your Son
There are different types of prayers our sons need from us at different times of their lives. Here are 5 prayers for your sons that they always need from their moms.
Prayer for My Son’s Salvation and Spiritual Growth
It doesn’t matter if we raise the most successful sons. If your son is the wealthiest man in the world, the smartest, or even the most handsome, none of that is important if he doesn’t know Christ.
The most necessary part of being a mother is presenting Christ to our children. A faithful mother should pray every day that her sons come to know the Lord as their Savior.
None of us has the power to know when God is dealing with our children’s hearts about salvation. We should pray that they will have an open heart to hear God’s Word, understand it, and turn to Christ.
If your children have accepted Christ into their hearts, your prayers are not done! We should still pray that our sons will seek God and have a strong faith in Him.
I want my sons to be close to God and honor and serve Him. My prayer is that they will always say “yes” to Jesus and serve Him all through their lives.
Prayer: Lord God, I ask you to speak to my son’s heart today. I pray that He will hear your voice and say “yes” to whatever you ask him to do. I pray that he will give his heart to you while he’s young and that he will serve you his whole life.

Prayer for my Son’s Protection
What is it about boys that make them so prone to danger? Even as toddlers, they enjoy terrifying their mamas! Prayers for God to keep my sons safe are never far from my lips!
While we should pray often for our boys to be physically safe, they are under spiritual attack, as well. We must also pray for God to protect our sons spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.
If your sons are teenagers or young men, they need your prayers for protection even more. In our technological world, spiritual danger is very present for our sons.
Smartphones offer them unlimited and instant access to things we don’t want them to see. Even if your children don’t have access to the internet on their own phones, they may have friends who are only too willing to share. This is a real danger we have to be mindful of and pray for protection over our sons.
Prayer: Lord, I ask you today to protect my son. Help him to stand firm in what is right, and to make wise choices. Protect his eyes and ears from things he shouldn’t see and hear. Protect his mind from evil thoughts, and protect his innocent heart.
Prayer for My Struggling Son
Nothing hurts a mom’s heart more than to see her son struggling. Whether they’re young and struggling with math or making friends, a teenager with “girl issues” or an adult who lost a job, it’s hard to watch them struggle.
To a mom, it even hurts to see her sons in trouble that they brought on themselves. We know that their actions have consequences, and sometimes we have to watch them struggle.
God sees your son’s struggles, and He cares even more than you do. He wants to hear you pray for your son, and trust that He is working even when you can’t see.
Prayer: Jesus, I pray that you will help my son today. I see that he is struggling, but you see his heart and you know the true issues. Please give him strength and wisdom. Give him peace today and help him to feel your presence in his life.
Prayer for My Son’s Health
A few years ago one of my sons had some health issues that could’ve ended up needing surgery. As I watched him struggle, and knew that he was in pain and afraid, I would’ve done anything to take it from him.
Isn’t that what motherhood is? Wishing you could take every pain and problem away? Unfortunately, that isn’t possible. Sometimes our kids have health problems we can’t take away.
But our Heavenly Father can heal little illnesses as well as even more complicated sicknesses and diseases. We can talk to God about our children’s health needs and trust Him to do what’s best.
I cannot understand why children get sick. But I do know that God is always good, and He is gracious and merciful.
Prayer: God, I pray that you will help my son to be healthy and strong. If he faces sickness, I pray that you will give healing in Your will, and give grace and peace through times of sickness.
Prayer for My Son’s Future
I don’t want to think much about the day that my sons will no longer live under my roof. But I know it’s coming! As much as I wish my boys could always be my little babies…they won’t.
I pray often for my sons’ future. They are so young, I have no idea where their lives may end up. Like many elementary-age boys, my sons are still in the “I want to drive an excavator” or “I want to be a fireman” stage.
But no matter what they choose to do, or where they may go in life, I want them to follow the Lord’s leading. God’s Word says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
I try to teach and train my sons in the right way while also praying they will trust God to guide and direct them. I pray that they will find good wives who will serve God with them. Yes, I even pray for my future daughters-in-law, whoever and wherever they may be.
Prayer: Jesus, I pray that my son will always follow you in his life. I pray that He will seek your will, and do it. I pray for his future wife, wherever she may be right now. I pray that she is learning about You and that she will come to salvation while she’s young. Help them to follow you and serve you all their lives.
A Birthday Prayer for My Son
When you’re a kid your birthday is always about looking forward to another new year. But when you’re a mom, your children’s birthday doesn’t pass without thinking about the day they were born.
A son is a beautiful blessing to his parents. The Bible says in Proverbs 23:24-25, “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.”
When we raise children that are wise and choose to serve God, they bring us joy. A son’s birthday is a great day to be thankful for the blessing he is in your life.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the son that You gave me {number} of years ago. I am so thankful that You allowed me to be his mom. I pray that You will help me to love him as You love him. Help me to show You to him through my attitudes and actions. Help him to see You in me. I pray that he will continue to grow strong in his body and in his faith and that he will seek You and serve You all of his life. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
Pray for Your Son Without Ceasing
Being a mom to boys, I keep the Bible verse “pray without ceasing” very close to my heart! While it’s important to set aside time to pray intentionally for our sons every day, there are a lot of times when we shoot quick prayers to Heaven in a hurry!
Maybe you’re praying for your son while you rock him back to sleep in the middle of the night. Or you may have passed that season, and you’re praying for him as he’s struggling in school or even college. Perhaps your sons are grown and raising families of their own. As sad as it seems, maybe you’re in a situation where you have little or no contact with your son.
No matter their age, stage of life they’re in or even if they aren’t speaking to us, sons need their moms to pray over them. Always and forever praying, just like they’re still a little baby in your arms.
God hears you, Mama. Don’t give up.
