I grew up with cousins who were all close in age, and one of my favorite events was our annual Christmas party. My dad and his twin brother took turns hosting, and it got bigger, crazier, and more fun every year!
Some years I would leave with no voice because I had laughed so hard. Okay, maybe I yelled a little, too, but that’s what happens when you’re part of a family that is very competitive and opinionated. Everyone talks loudly. After all, how else can you be heard?
We haven’t had our family Christmas party in several years now. We’re all married now, and most of us have kids and have moved away. But I still cherish those fun times with cousins, aunts, and uncles arguing disagreeing over who said the answer first.

How to Host a Christmas Game Night
Many families are spread out and busy, and we don’t have time to get together anymore. The Christmas holiday is the perfect time to host your family and create holiday fun and memories that will last forever.
If you’re looking for creative ways to get everyone off their phones and interacting with one another, try a Christmas family game night. You can host it alongside your Christmas dinner, at a Christmas get-together earlier in the month, or on Christmas Eve. Time and location don’t matter. But having a wonderful time with your family does!
The best Christmas games for families are ones where everyone gets involved. Put a five-year-old on a team with a teenager and Grandpa, and watch them form new bonds as they work together to win the competition.
Don’t stress out about making sure everything is perfect. Just focus on fun activities that will get everyone involved in having a great time.
8 Tips for a Christmas Family Game Night
The best part of having a Christmas game night is having the entire family together. It’s nice just to have a good time with family members who love one another.
But these fun ideas will guarantee that all of your party guests will have a fabulous–and sometimes hilarious time!
1. Choose a theme
Decide on a specific Christmas theme or motif to create a cohesive and festive atmosphere. You could choose a classic theme like Winter Wonderland, Santa’s Workshop, or Ugly
Sweater. Or go with a specific Christmas movie like”A Christmas Story” or “Home Alone.”
2. Invitations
Design festive invitations that reflect your theme. You can use online invitation tools to send digital invitations or create physical invitations to set the mood. Even if all of your guests live in the same house, invitations are a fun way to set the mood and get everyone in the holiday spirit!
3. Decorations
Decorate your space with Christmas lights, ornaments, wreaths, and festive items. Add a touch of humor with funny prints, like posters featuring witty Christmas quotes. Create a photo
booth area complete with props such as Santa hats, reindeer antlers, and amusing signs for memorable snapshots.
If Christmas parties are a holiday tradition in your family, feature a few photos from past celebrations. Everyone is sure to get a good laugh!
4. Food and drink
Serve festive snacks and drinks, such as hot cocoa, eggnog, sugar cookies, and gingerbread. You can also prepare a holiday-themed buffet with dishes like roast turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and stuffing.
In our family, we love to have all of our favorite appetizers at our holiday parties. Things like buffalo chicken dip, hot sausage dip, chips, crackers, cheese, etc. A Christmas party is also a great time to try one of those trendy charcuterie boards that are all over Instagram.
5. Prizes and Favors
Have small prizes or party favors for game winners and participants. These can include Christmas-themed items like ornaments, candles, or small gift cards. Make sure you have prizes for older kids and little kids, too. You don’t need to be fancy, something simple will do just fine!
6. Music
Create a holiday playlist featuring classic Christmas songs to keep the atmosphere festive. Or, match your music to your party theme. Keep the music playing on repeat, or use it as a fun way to play “pass the gift.”
(Similar to musical chairs. Wrap a gift is several layers of paper and pass it from person to person. Whoever has the gift when the music stops, removes on layer of paper. The final person gets to keep the gift.)
A few fun choices include:
- You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch
- Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
- Run, Run, Rudolph
- All I Want for Christmas is You
- Winter Wonderland
- Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!
- Last Christmas
- I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
- I’m Getting Nothing for Christmas
- Jingle Bell Rock
7. Dress Code
Encourage guests to wear Christmas-themed attire, such as ugly sweaters, Santa hats, or reindeer antlers. Make it a competition for who has the ugliest socks, most festive sweater, or funniest headgear! Don’t forget to award a prize!
Create a “secret word” that no one can say. Whoever says it has to wear the Santa hat, or reindeer antlers until someone else messes up!
8. Enjoy and Capture Memories
Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the evening with your guests. Try to stay off your phone, but keep it close by to capture all the fun memories you’ll be making! Grab some fun photo booth props and take funny pictures. The crazier, the better!
