Book Review: Secrets of Sex and Marriage by Shaunti Feldhahn and Dr. Michael Sytsma
Does it shock you a little bit to see a book written about sex for Christian couples? The truth is, many couples have questions about their sex lives. In The Secrets of Sex and Marriage, Shaunti and Dr. Sytsma share all the things you’ve always wondered, but been too nervous to ask.
Some people talk too much about sex. It’s everywhere you look from TV to movies to your Instagram ads.
A lot of what we see is just meant to sell a product, and it isn’t really accurate. Many of us have wrong ideas of what sex and intimacy are, but we’re too afraid or nervous to ask.
Even if you do want to ask questions about sex in your marriage–who are you going to ask?
Secrets of Sex and Marriage Review
For most of us, sex is a private, personal topic. And it should be. Sex and intimacy are gifts from God to a married man and woman.
Since it is such a sensitive topic, many of us may wonder for years if we’re doing it right, doing it enough and even if we’re truly satisfying our husbands.
Through multiple surveys, Shaunti and Dr. Sytsma have discovered some of the most common questions and struggles many couples have.
You’re not alone if you’ve ever asked any of these questions:
- Are we normal?
- Why isn’t my spouse as interested as I am?
- How do we fix our problems in the bedroom?
- How can we get on the same page about how often we want to have sex?
These are just a few of the topics discussed in the book. It includes a faith-based approach, as well as a guide to understanding sex.
Secrets of Sex and Marriage is full of wisdom and practical tips for couples who want to have a healthy, thriving sex life–and yes, and happy marriage. (They’re 100% connected!)

Recommendation
The subtitle of this book is 8 Surprises That Make All the Difference. As I read it, I was surprised at a lot of the answers and recommendations.
I read parts to my husband, and we learned a lot together. It’s eye-opening to know what you’re doing right and where you can improve.
I especially liked the chapter about mindset shifts. I didn’t realize some inaccurate beliefs I had, to realize some of the mindsets my husband has, too.
It’s encouraging to read how you can overcome these mindsets, and work towards a happy, healthier marriage!
I recommend this book for couples who want to understand their spouses better, and create the marriage and intimacy they’ve always wanted. However, it’s also important to know (and the authors make very clear) these tips aren’t for people in abusive marriages, or with more serious mental health issues.
Secrets of Sex and Marriage is an encouraging and enlightening read that will truly answer your most intimate questions from the bedroom!
