Book Review: Between the Sound and the Sea by Amanda Cox

The first thing that drew me to Amanda Cox’s book Between the Sound and the Sea was the gorgeous cover. And the story inside matches the vibe with a sweet story of friendship lost and love found.

Between the Sound and the Sea is set in the Outer Banks, which made me so happy because I love that area. I had the opportunity to visit one of the beautiful lighthouses there. It’s a truly magical place!

Between the Sound and the Sea Book Summary

In this story, Josephina “Joey” Harris is looking for a fresh start after her family name is damaged in her hometown of Copper Creek, Tennessee. She applies for a job restoring an old lighthouse off the coast of Ocracoke, North Carolina.

Walt O’Hare is an old man who has lived a life of regret for mistakes he made in the 1940s. After the end of World War 2, he left the pain of the islands behind and moved to Kentucky to start a new life.

But now that his wife has passed away, he’s looking to rectify the past. He purchases Bleakpoint Island, along with the lighthouse and lightkeeper’s cottage. As Joey works with Walt to restore the light and cottage, she’ll uncover and decades-old mystery, and find a key that unlocks a new future.

Review

This is my first book by this author, and I was slightly disappointed. The action moves along rather slowly, and the book gets a little wordy.

It’s a very lyrical-style novel, and it’s beautifully written. However, I felt like the conversation was really unnatural. Sometimes they spoke in a common vernacular, but other times they used fancy words and phrases that seemed clunky.

Between the Sound and the Sea holds a powerful story of forgiveness and redemption. I did love that it portrayed God’s love and forgiveness in a beautiful way.

The book had several memorable quotes. Here is one of my favorites:

God meets us right where we’re at. And maybe things in our lives get broken down and beaten up along the way. The good news is restoration work is kind of His specialty.

This was not my favorite book. However, I know that Ms. Cox is an amazing author, and her books are very popular. Even though it isn’t my style, it might be yours.

It is a definite must-read if you’re a fan of second chances, lighthouses, and island life!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
